Notice the name below the number 10
WD represents the aircraft's name
"Wilshie Duit"

I mention the work that the Navy did with the old R4D
and the "super"R4D-8 on skiis in the Antarctic for so many years.
I flew them (R4D-8) in two VR squadrons
and for two years in VX-6 in the Antarctic
Many trips to the South Pole
and many, many open snow landings all over the continent too .

Was a fine bird and I will never forget my time in it.

In this picture, please note the sled piled with JATO bottles.
WD represents the aircraft's name
"Wilshie Duit"
....which refers to the fact that when I got the aircraft (1958),
it had gone through major changes at O and R in Jacksonville
to rebuild the box section of the wing due to a crash on the Ice
the year before (1957).

I flew the plane for the next two years..
...and she never let me down... Buz

This is a takeoff useing
