The DC-3 Aviation Museum
Presents:

A photograph from the foot of Liv Glacier

Submitted by: James Waldron, Commander USN (Ret.) April 1996

"Charlene" R4D- w/Eighteen JATO racks

The picture was taken at the foot of the Liv Glacier about 400 miles inland
from the northern edge of the Ross Sea ice Shelf.
At the time we were just setting up a weather station halfway between
the Naval Air Facility, McMurdo Sound and the South Pole.

For a thrilling and informative story read:

"Flight of the Puckered Penguins"
by Cdr. Jim Waldron

The story of some early flights over the Antarctic.

To Fellow Antarcticans and others who are interested in polar exploration:

My name is Jim Waldron and in 1956 and 1957
I spent 16 months on the Antarctic Continent as a naval aviator,
performing many flights in support of Operation DeepFreeze II and III.

During my stay on the Ice I took many color photographs
which I have recently digitized. I have also written a book,

"The Flight of the Puckered Penguins,"

a 31 chapter book which details my
experiences while flying over that ice covered continent.

In the past year or so I have e-mailed many of my photographs, in JPEG
format, to folks who are interested in such things.
I have also made my book available on the Internet
for anyone to download who so wishes.

Now I have placed my book,

"The Flight of the Puckered Penguins"

and over 130 of my photographs on a CD disk.
This CD disk is entitled
"Antarctica 1956-57"
and it contains four folders.

The first folder is titled,
"Penguin Book"
and is composed of 31 chapters of my book,
"The Flight of the Puckered Penguins,"
a personal biography of the author,
an introduction page, a footnote section
and a Little America Wintering Over Roster section.
This folder is written in HTML
format and should open in most computers, PC and Macintosh alike.

The second folder is titled,
"Printing Folder"
and contains 101 high
quality photographs of the Antarctic, most of which were taken by me
in 1956-57. These pictures are not intended necessarily
for viewing on the computer
but for printing on a color or black and white printer.
When reduced in size to 8 inches horizontal
they will print at 300 dots per inch,
which gives a high quality print.
Color programs such as Adobe PhotoDeluxe
and Photoshop give excellent rendition.
The pictures are in JPEG format and will
open on both PC and Macintosh computers.

The third folder is titled,
"Viewing Folder"
and contains the same 101 photographs shown in the
"Printing Folder," however, the pictures are at 72 dots per inch
and will fill up a good portion of your monitor screen with
full color views of these photographs.
Again, these pictures will open on PC and Macintosh computers.
There are a number of slide show programs available
on the Internet that allow you to view the pictures in this folder
in sequential order, slow or fast or even as screen savers.
Windows users should search under Yahoo
or some other search program with the following search
words, "Slide Show and Windows."
Macintosh users should use the following
search words, "Slide Show and Macintosh."

The fourth folder is titled
"W.O. Personnel"
and contains 35 pictures of individuals who wintered over
at Little America FIVE during the winter of 1957.
These photographs are at 300 dots per inch and need to be reduced
in size for monitor viewing but will print exceptionally sharp.

Please send a check or money order for
$20.00,
plus your mailing address,
I will send you the CD disk by return mail.

The $20.00 will cover the cost of packaging and mailing,
so $20 is all I will require.
Please send your check and mailing address to:

"The R4D was good enough for my grandfather
