When it arrived at the Casino the passengers raced for the tables. They would gamble most of the night. The flight was scheduled to depart so as to arrive at Long Beach in time for everyone, hung over or not to return to work without any sleep. How do I know this?, some of the pilots were my friends and they complained that it was virtually impossible to go to sleep in the rooms over the Casino because of the raucous noise from the all night party.
It is not widely known, but the famous and beautiful Catalina Island off the shore of Southern California is, or was owned by the Wrigley Gum family of Chicago. They liked their privacy, and needed a good way to commute from Chicago to Catalina. They purchased a DC-3 for this purpose, and I saw it many times in the hangar at Catalina. To this day, Catalina's "Airport in the Sky" is a Private strip, and I believed run by a Trust, or foundation formed by the Wrigley family.
Catalina Airport is a pleasure to visit but is now being boycotted by local pilots for their excessive landing fees.
