DOUGLAS DC-3
In World War II the RCAF had three Dakota squadrons.
In 1944, 437 was created in England and served in Northwest Europe;
in that same year, 435 and 436 Squadrons
were formed in India for service with the British XIV Army in Burma.
Between 1943 and 1989, almost one-half of a century,
the RCAF and Canadian Forces (CF) Air Command employed 169 Dakotas.
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Dakota
proudly wears the colours of 436 Squadron,
whose slogan was
"Canucks Unlimited."
This aeroplane (C- GDAK) was built in June 1939
and today is the second highest flying time
DC-3/Dakota in the world,
with 81,393 hours of airtime
(equal to approximately 9 ½ years of continuous flying)
and 12 million miles
(nearly 500 times around the world).
The CWH Gooney Bird is still being used to deploy parachutists-
but only at air shows.
CWH obtained its Dakota in 1981.

'Battle of Britain
Memorial Flight Visitor Centre'
ZA947 is an RAF C3
that spent many years in the transport flight of the Royal Aircraft Establishment
(the UKs nearest equivalent of NACA/NASA, now subsumed in other organisations).
She was purchased from the RCAF in 1971.
During her time at the RAE she was used for a variety of trials work
as well as for moving personnel and material.
The aircraft was 'retired' in 1993 and passed to the
Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/bbmfhome.html
where she provides transport, multi-engine training and acts as an independent exhibit.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
is the Royal Air force's historic aircraft unit,
providing a flying memorial to lost aircrew.
It operates;
1x Lancaster Mk III Heavy Bomber
2x Huricane Mk IIc,IIc Fighters
5x Spitfire Mk IIa,Vb,LF IXe,XIX,XIX Fighters
1x Dakota C3 Transport
2x DHC-1 Chipmunk Trainers
The BBMF is an RAF unit and the aircraft are maintained and operated by serving RAF personnel.
When not flying the aircraft may be seen at the BBMF visitor centre at RAF Coltishall.
ZA947 began its BBMF service painted to represent the aircraft of
Flight Lieutenant David Lord,
who won the Victoria Cross
(Britians highest decoration)
during operation Market Garden.
She is now painted in a Berlin Airlift scheme
as YS-H of 77 Sqn.
In 1994 she was used to drop (IIRC)
UK Parachute Regt personnel on the 'Pegasus Bridge' DZ
as the initial 'stick' of an event to mark the
50th anniversary of Op Overlord.
