DreamFlight,

If you would like to fly with us on a scenic flight

John or Betty Pappas by reply e-mail at dreamflight@sprynet.com
or by phone at 949 472 9612.
You may also visit our web site at
www.thedc3rose.com
to see more about our activities.

Hello to all of our friends ~ I hope that this message finds things well with you. All is fine here. This is a reminder message that we will be holding our DC-3 Ground School and Type Rating class as scheduled to begin Friday, April 13 at Corona, CA. There is still room for those who want to attend and obtain your DC-3 Type Rating – either PIC or SIC.

Last week we completed training for three 61.58 applicants and had a great time flying our beautiful DC-3 ‘Rose’. If you are not already a DC-3 pilot you will thrill to the experience of actually flying and getting your new Type Rating. There just isn’t anything like flying a DC-3. Please visit our web site at www.thedc3rose.com to see more about our organization and what we do.

Everyone is welcome to attend our classes. The cost for the DC-3 Ground School alone (no flying) is only $450. You will learn about the DC-3, its systems, how we fly the aircraft and, probably, have a chance to fly along with us when we do some of the flight training. This is a great opportunity to learn ‘what a DC-3 is all about !!’

As a DreamFlight trained pilot, you will be welcome to fly with us as we attend air shows, events and other flying activities. DreamFlight is the ONLY place where anyone who wants to fly the DC-3 can actually do so. Please e-mail or call anytime to 949 472 9612 or mobile 949 235 6532 to make arrangements for your being with us at our DC-3 training.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best … John Pappas for DreamFlight

For those who are getting their DC-3 PIC Type Rating your flight training will proceed thru the week with your check ride on Thursday or Friday, April 19 / 20.

Please contact me by e-mail or call anytime to 949 472 9612 or mobile 949 235 6532 to make sure that you are enrolled in this course. Remember, for those who have completed the DreamFlight DC-3 Ground School, you are welcome to attend this class at no charge so that you can refresh your training. For those of you who are not interested in obtaining a DC-3 Type Rating you may consider attending the DC-3 Ground School as an opportunity to learn about the DC-3 and it’s operation. The course is a great way to really understand this wonderful aircraft.

We will also have time for anyone who wants to renew their DC-3 FAR 61.59 currency with a flight review and check ride. You are probably able to use your DC-3 check ride – either a new Type Rating or 61.58 renewal – to satisfy the 61.58 12/24 month renewal requirement for another type rating.

PROPOSED SEMINAR TRIP TO PARIS AIR SHOW, June 2007: We are putting together a seminar series and trip to appear at the Paris Air Show in June, 2007. This will be a fascinating adventure for those who participate. We will conduct a seminar which follows (each direction) the route of flight that 'Rose' and our aircraft took to journeyby the Northern Route to the U.K. / ETO during WWII. Seminars each day will explore the history of these flights including preparation, route decisions, wx considerations, base building / maintenance, etc.

The actual flight in 'Rose' is at NO CHARGE for those who participate with a paid seminar fee. There are only a limited number of NO COST seats available. All who are interested may participate in the seminar program. We expect to have guest appearances / talks by actual participants (flight and ground personnel) of these crossings in the 1940's.

Pilots who participate
will be able to log an Atlantic Crossing
in their logbook.

Additionally, we will provide services for those who
want to participate in the seminar and who want to fly their own aircraft
to the Paris Air Show.
DreamFlight will assist with aircraft preparation,
flight planning and route assistance on each leg of the trip.
For those who want to fly only one direction in their own aircraft
and log an ATLANTIC CROSSING,
DreamFlight will provide services to return your aircraft
to your home base from the U.K.

Those are only a few of the exciting things in store for DreamFlight.
Please contact me by e-mail or call anytime to 949 472 9612
or mobile to learn more about what we are doing at DreamFlight
and to participate in our activities.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards, John & Betty Pappas for DreamFlight

Puff the Magic Dragon is here:

Puff's personal cell phone:
(817) 675-2344

Call for info on air show dates, tours, info and flights.

Puff is a C-47A delivered to Army Air Corps in 1942,
surplused to commercial use and is now a flying museum
configured to look like
a Vietnam War AC-47 gunship,
call sign "Spooky".

This airplane was purchased by a Texas business
and donated to Aero Heritage Museum of Burleson, Texas
at:
http://www.aeroheritage.com.

The history of the airplane is that it is a glider tow variant
with the tail squared off for the glider hook,
it made the D-Day operation in 1944
as part of Troop Transport Command,
was surplused after the war
and put into commercial service as a DC-3C.

They have had the airplane about two months
and it was repainted in "camo" May 14, so it is fresh and shiny.
There are dummy gatlings mounted in the customary positions.
The airplane is hangared in Arizona
on the site of the previous owner when not touring.
I marveled at the airplane with one of the pilots,
he remarked that it was still flying on 1930s technology,
and noted that Israel just removed their last two DC-3/C-47s service this year.
Apparently, some small outfit under contract to USN is still running a DC-3
to San Clemente Island from Long Beach 2-3 times every week.

Puff's crew collects a few bucks to tour inside the airplane
and is offering paid flights with 40 min. total in the airplane,
20 min. of that in the air,
and you get a Puff certificate and t-shirt
with the
Spooky logo at the end of the flight.

Air Service Berlin
operates a beautifully restored C-47 in Air Transport Command colours at Berlin Tempelhof. Their website is :

One more link for a company still flying DC-3:

Enterprise Airlines (Oshawa, Canada)

They have a cargo DC-3 (C-FOOW), with piston engines, and a 36 passenger
version (C-GEAI) converted for turboprops. Charter available.

Aerotaxi operates three DC-3's,
almost daily, in regular lines or charter flights.

The Aerotaxi CU-T1192 was born in January, 1942
as a C-47A-50-DL - 42-24166 (c/n 10028),

and shiped to RAF in India.
Today, the paint is faded, but she still flies smooth, in great mechanical shape
(with a 30 passengers configuration).
I believe that she's one of the world's oldest planes flying
daily in a regular airline.

DC-3's do the
Havana/Nueva Gerona/Havana route,
also to Varadero, Viñales and other cities.

The best thing to do is phone to
"Aerotaxi" offices and ask them:
"Which is the DC-3 route this week?"

A day before the flight, confirm with them
that the DC-3 is the aircraft to be used for that flight
because aircraft are subject to last minute change

The Airtaxi folks were very kind and considerate -
they were surprised to find someone that loved DC-3s
and just wanted to fly in this kind of plane.
With the embargo, the maintenance is made with parts
imported from Canada and Venezuela.

(The plane was in Havana
and should take some german tourists in Varadero --
so, the Aerotaxi people gave me an almost free flight
(US$ 22) to Varadero, in the empty plane.
Later, I took the same plane (empty again)
back to Havana -
I was feeling like a DC-3 owner!... Jason Vogel)
