Movie title: Nebezsti jezdci (Ghost Sky Riders)
Issued: 1969, Czech Film Studios - Ateliery Barandov, Prague, Czechoslovakian Republic
Directed by: Jindrich Polak
Based on: the autobiographic novel by Filip Jansky
(civic name: Richard Husnik, the former WW-II air-gunner and navigator)
Topic: the story of the young air-gunner and Vickers-Wellington and then B-24 Liberator czech crew during the Battle of Britain and WW-II

In this movie there is footage of two Li-2 (Lisunov-2, is the DC3/C-47 made in the USSR
during WW-II under the official license)
The LI-2 (during the time the movie was made), was ending their duty in the Czech Air Force.

The first one (s/n 23442804, military No. 2804) was painted duly as the British Transport Command Dakota Mk.I.
The second one (s/n 23442209, military No. 2209, ex civilian Czech Airlines OK-GAD up to year 1957)
played its role in the extraordinary conversion to Vickers Wellington.
The conversion covered the new rudder, the fuselage "coat"
and both the new (fully functional, even with the firing guns!) turrets.
The engines, props, cowlings, undercarriage and wings remained C-47/Li-2.
The converted plane was not allowed to fly (as the Wellington), but it was able (and cleared to) taxi by its own.
The specialty was the narrow slots in the skin of the fuselage, needed for the original C-47/Li-2 propellers,
which was by some inches too large for the new "Wellington" fat fuselage.
The pictures from this movie and from the process of the conversion can be seen in:
"Lisunov´s Wellington" by M. Balous, Air Enthusiast, February 1973,
and in Czech magazine Letectví a Kosmonautika, No.7, 1994, pg.517-519.

It has been broadcasted several times on the Czech TV.

Spitfire (UK "First of the Few") 1942

RAF- Leslie Howard; Biography of the Spitfire designer R.J Mitchel.
So far unique, it's the only true movie about aircraft design.

Shot with models, mock-up?, newsreel footage of Schineder race
(Supermarine Sea Lion), pre-war German gliders, film of the prototype Spitfire.

Lots of film of a Spitfire squadron verus a Luftwaffe He 111 raid.
This footage was shot at RAF Ibsley with 118 Squad.
and 501 Squadron between operational sorties in late 1941.
They were flying Spitfire Mk.V's. Most of the aircrew were real, many didn't make it far past filming.

The He 111 was a captured example (AW177) and the camera plane was a Bristol Blenheim IV.
Actor Leslie Howard was killed 1 June 1943 when his KLM DC-3 was shot down
by Ju 88C-6's of V/JG40 over the Bay of Biscay.

STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND (1955)
James Stewart, June Allynson, Frank Lovejoy, Barry Sullivan, Alex Nicol
Directed by: Anthony Mann.
Aerial Photographer: Paul Mantz.
Genre: Drama.

In this movie Paul Mantz directed aerial sequences of massive, six-engined B-36,
and the sleek, then new B-47 bombers, but
there are a good sequence with a DC-3 flying and arriving with only one engine.

DIEN BIEN PHU (1992)
Donald Pleasence, Patrick Catalifo, Jean-Fancois Balmer,
Patrick Chauvel as Lieutenant Duroc DC-3 pilot.

Directed by: Pierre Schoendoerffer.
Country: France

The French have done few films about their own Vietnam war. Schoendoerffer has done two of them, the 317th platoon and Dien Bien Phu, the latter about the 1954 battle where the French army was defeated and lost the war. This movie was a sort of answer to Oliver Stone's "PLATOON" and its hand-held cinematography and "realistic" shooting at setting strongly evokes the recent US war movies.
Massive DC-3 scenes with it's real sounds.

"They Were Expendable" with John Wayne. The film is an adaptation of
seminal history of the PT Boat campaigns in the Pacific -
"At Close Quarters" by Bulkley. No longer in print.
The film contains not only great a startup sequence - filmed on a sound stage
with real C-47 engine sounds (it looks like they actually started it on the
stage)- but also exterior take-off and fly-by. The start-up includes the
requisite starter whine and hit-and-miss engine firing. In addition to the C-47
sounds, the film contains some great PT Boat footage and sound effects.
The 12 cylinder unmuffled Liberty running a close second to the radial
for power sounds.

Command Decision 1948

USAAF- Clark Gable; B-17 Commanders decide strategy.
Loosely based on the Schwienfurt- Regensburg missions.
Mainly on the ground, showing a rare look
at the behind the scenes politics and strategy rangling at the top levels.

All the combat footage was from the documentary "Target for Today".
Some footage was shot at San Fernando airport in California
using 2 Paul Mantz
B-17F's (N67974 + ?). C-47. Models.
Capt. Gable, with much opposition trained as an air gunner,
then spent months and 5 sorties in the 8th AF
filming to produce "Combat America". It was shot with the 352 BG on B-17F's at Polebrook in England.
Actor Cameron Mitchell had been a bombardier,
Donlevy was a former USAAF Flight instructor.

The 1993 film "The Cover Girl Murders" is graced by air, landing and ground
shots of TANSA DC3C XA- RZF, in the opening sequence.
Some interior shots also may have been taken aboard this aircraft.

If you can stick this fairly dull film out, and I did in the hope of a
reappearance, there are also two brief fly past sequences by a distant
DC-3/C-47 at the very end. The film appears to have been made in the Puerta
Vallarta area, judging from the credits but is supposed to be set on a
deserted island.

Proudly salutes the outstanding efforts of:

Mike Crawford

When we put the call out for the Words for
"Methuselah With Wings"
the challenge was taken up by many
and we received several versions of the poem
But Mike Crawfords efforts rose to the
"Top of the List"
Mike was the one who transcribed and sent us
the words from Mr. Brand's recordings
He then proceed to send us a taped copy of
"Methuselah With Wings".

Mike then went the next step,
and had the great pleasure of meeting
Mr. Brand about two months ago.
"He signed large copies of the poem and added greetings
for my old friend Don Croston and me.
He is a gracious and generous gentleman."

The DC-3 Aviation Museum
Review of these Video's:

Avion Video's
Airline - Air Atlantique,
Airport Action- Alaska Anchorage,
Airport Action - Fairbanks/lake Hood,
Pig Props - USA

A masterful well done set of video's, instantly and effortlessly vaults to the front ranks
of "Plane Spotters" finest.
Nevertheless, The DC-3/Dakota scenes confirm doubts remaining
as to who is actually going to see these video's.

The Ratio of Jets and Turbo Props is greater
then the DC-3 / Dakotas...
but when they are presented,
it is in true style to the "Dignity"
of the "Grand Old Lady"

Incredibly beautiful backgrounds.

"A date video it ain't."

But a "Plane Spotter"
will be on the edge of their seat because of the nonstop action.

The narrative, based on the ongoing true story, concerns the day to day
activity of Freighters as they carry cargo around the world

The clichés of the Aircraft Cargo Industry are preserved intact,
including the appropriately mixed jet and Turbo Prop and piston driven Aircraft
and the native landscape is caught on the highest quality filming
we have seen in a very long time...

Avion Video also gives the Hollywood quality to these great lumbering beasts of burden,
as they arise and descend in flight... Flights of the big, small and everything in between,
against impossible climactic odds. But by this point, such a wonderful video payoff
is literally overkill, since we've already seen so much outstanding representation
of these aircraft, that we're numb with pleasure.

Best though, a bit of narrative geniuses that,
by cutting from a close-up to another Aircraft startup,
leads us to think, though out the video's,
that the action is non stop instead of a fine job of editing.

As we ultimately learn, some of the video, appear to be in flashback,
as we see aircraft from the past doing the tasks
that were asked of them 40, 50 and 60 years ago...

To Avion Video's credit, though, the video goes beyond the standard
"Work Horses of the sky"
to engage in some moving, musings about the loneliness of Cargo airfreight
and the necessary moral tradeoff that Commerce always imposes, "Technology".
The videos are amazing: the expressive use of sound, handheld camera, and color
on the various airfields (to suggest the Aviation Frontier) is magnificent.
Avion Video's are also great on details,
of the Aircraft's origin and relationship to the job it is now doing
(though another gesture, the ongoing motif of Avion Video's show wrecked hulks
and aircraft in a to be restored state manifesting itself in views of the past.
And as we have come to expect from the Avion Video's,
the rhythm is handled masterfully,
alternating between the brute power of Jet scenes of landing and takeoff's
and the revealing of rare moments of unusual aircraft from around the world.

But Avion Video, being Avion Video, the inevitable creeps in as well,
as when they begin and end the video with dramatic, narrative shots of the terrain,
perhaps signaling a newfound love of the nature that surrounds these flight operations.
In this, Avion Video provides to those who have wanted to see the aircraft
and not be overwhelmed by excess music or non aviation footage, a great presentation.
Avion Video's has done so well That it will be quickly appreciated in the American system.
The usual Avion Video relationship to their viewers rears its head in the relationship
with All Aircraft. Jets, Turboprop, Recip's and seaplane
and the editors cannot resist adding a couple lines of dialogue,
in one final attempt to make certain that everyone is ready for the next Video.

Still, this is an exceptionally well done Video series and is "aviation intense" video's
whose sheer filming power ultimately transcends all its (many) available samples
of Aviation's progress.

We at The DC-3 Aviation Museum
thank Avion Video's
for providing these videos for our review
we received no additional remuneration
and this review is our evaluation of these tapes....

The DC-3 Aviation Museum thanks
First Light Productions
for the review copy of:
"Otis Spunkmeyer DC 3s."

Our staff has reviewed this video - We found it to be an outstanding video.

It doesn't matter that we all know how realistic the Idea of us flying
"The General" is. But this video helps us accomplish this very thing.
Nobody cares that the flying shots are totally of a 60 year old Aircraft,
or that the flying scenarios are of the San Francisco Bay Area.
It doesn't mean a thing that the scenes are repetitive,
and that the Aircraft is of a by-gone era.

Every real or wannabe DC-3/C-47/Dakota pilot
will consider this Video one of the quintessential DC-3 flying videos because...
well, nobody here could really agree on exactly why.
But they all agree that it cries out to be watched again and again.

There isn't a person that loves DC-3 Aviation History
that won't show this film repeatedly during a visit of another DC-3 Lover.
Our own, Bob Campbell's incredible mastery of the cockpit
certainly contributes to the video's appeal.
Bob's additional knowledge of photography was obvious
as the video was being filmed, as he positioned the aircraft for the filming,
that fact became a major moment to the video.

The sheer energy of the love for the "Grand Old Lady" shows,
as it combines with powerful footage and brings a rush of admiration for the DC-3.
The first time I sat in rapt attention as the throbbing pulse
of the start-up of those giant radials, ran through my eyes,
while smoke and rotating props filled the TV screen.
I could almost smell the oil and fuel.
The Aircraft are gorgeous, and treated with respect.
The camaraderie of the Otis Spunkmeyer organization is also appealing,
even if the portrayal of a Cookie Manufacture is an unusual sponsor.
Somehow this video cuts to the chase of what makes flying
the DC-3/C-47/Dakota every boyhood and modern Pilot's dream-
-a dream that stays with most guys long after they need glasses just to see the video clearly.

The Air-to Air photography is outstanding

(done by our own Bob Campbell)
The presentation is clear and professional
and the entire video is done in the proper

"Spirit"

that is due the

"Grand old Lady"

Alex Waning began taking photographs of aircraft in 1969
at the Air Show of the Netherlands Airforce, Soesterberg Air Force Base.
Since that time, the " aviation virus " has infected Alex.

To feed his passion for aviation, Alex began visiting airfields all over Holland by bicycle.
Later, as an employee of KLM, he was able to trade his Dutch-bike for his favorite mode of transportation and flew all over the world seeking out airplanes of the world.

Alex worked for the ATC division of the Dutch Air Force
from 1974 to 1980 and was afforded the opportunity to fly
in a number of different military and civil aircraft.
Types like the Lockheed Neptune, C-47, C-54, Albatross and Hercules are on his list.

"C-47's at War",

B/W /Color, 57 minutes,
by:
American Sound & Video
(1-800-869-6379)

This video covers many of the tasks the C-47 accomplished.
It even shows them loading mules to be flown from Burma to China.

My base, ATC - 1348th AAFBU flew
4 mules and 4 Chinese soldiers per load from Burma to China
while taking the Chinese 6th Army from Burma to China.
I recommend this video to anyone
who loves the old Gooney Bird!

There is a 1985 copyright video that was shown on NOVA
on public television years ago called

"The Plane That Changed The World".
(Yes, the plane that changed the world is the DC-3.)
The complete history from design to today is accurately
shown in well preserved film footage.
Designers and pilots from all eras are interviewed.

Audio Tape

"Ancient Silver Birds"

Old-time Feeder Airlines With Their Workhorse DC3s

Ancient Silver Birds is a 64-minute audio production--entertaining stories and original music--
cheerfully recalling the dozen or so years after World War II,
when you could buy surplus military airplanes cheaply,
and experienced pilots were looking for work.
In that time of economic growth, local service airlines
sprang up all over the place, linking smaller towns,
and feeding passengers and freight to the major transportation hubs.
The DC3, already phasing out of service with the major airlines,
was the workhorse of the feeder airlines...cheap, sturdy, and fun.

That time is gone these forty-some years since.
Those who remember it are awash in nostalgia.
Those who missed it are astonished by that wild and woolly activity
in the commercial airways.
Ancient Silver Birds tells the tales.

Here's the complete flight log of this first production cassette:

We Thank ABQ Communications Corporation, for providing
The DC-3 Aviation Museum the tape
"Ancient Silver Birds"
for review.
We Found the Tape to be a well done, informative and entertaining.
Providing glimpses, of a time when the DC-3 was the
flying Commercial Aircraft of the Nation.
The narrative and stories are those collective things
that have created the legend,
that fans of this great aircraft thrive on...

"I would recommend this tape
to anyone that has a love
or curiosity of the

"Grand OLE Lady"

I feel it would be outstanding for anyone
that has retired from commercial Aviation.
as well as
any of their children or grandchildren
that have no idea what their parents
and grandparents are talking about
when they describe what
they did for a living.

This is the day to day experiences
and inner workings
of the people and Aircraft
that accomplished flight
in the days before navigational aids
or support airports.

This is the "makings" of the legend
that have people like us
dedicating a good portion of our life,
to making sure that the

"Grand OLE Lady"
is never forgotten..
